Regular Registration 
    We look forward to enrolling your child in Northern High School. The Guidance Office hours are Monday-Friday, 7:15-3:00. Guidance Counselors are assigned alphabetically by the student's last name and will follow them throughout their time here at Northern High School. 
    You will need to complete the registration packet and have the following items to facilitate the enrollment process : Residency Verification (i.e.  a lease/rental agreement, deed, home tax bill, or escrow papers), Immunization Documentation, the original Birth Certificate, and an official transcript or last report card from the previous school that your child attended.  Once these documents are ready and you have completed the registration material you will need to call and schedule an appointment with the assigned counselor at 560-3537.

 

Graduate Records

    Graduates in the years 2007 or earlier will need to contact the DPS Record Center for all transcripts and records.  You may  contact the Durham Public Schools Record Center at 560-3707. Records for current graduates and one year prior to the current year are the only files kept on sight.  For more infromation please contact Mrs. Donna Hamm , Northern High School , Records Specialist at 560-3956 ext. 56174.

 

2009-2010 SAT Test Dates 


    Publications for the 2009-2010 school year beginning this fall become  available in early August. The 2009-2010 test dates are October 10, November 7, December 5, January 23, March 13, May 1, and June 5. 

   Make sure you register prior to the deadlines which are approximately one month before the test dates. Check the website at www.CollegeBoard.com to register online. 
Forms will be distributed to the seniors in the fall.  Other students may obtain forms in the Guidance office.


2009-2010 ACT Testing 


    Forms will be available in the Guidance Office in early August or you may apply online at
www.actstudent.org.  Test dates are:  September 12, October 24, December 12, February 6, April 10, and June 12.  Be sure apply prior to the posted deadlines approximately one month prior to the testing date.

Prospective Teacher Event-September 21, 2009

Interested in teaching?  Come join us on Monday, September 21st!  The Elon Teaching Fellows program will be hosting an informational Teaching Fellows/Prospective Teacher event for high school students on Monday, September 21st from 5:00-7:00pm at Elon University in the Isabella Cannon Room, Center of the Arts. You will have direct access to our Teaching Fellows and School of Education program coordinators to learn more and ask questions about:

  • North Carolina Teaching Fellows application process 
  • Interviewing
  • North Carolina Teaching Fellows program
  • Elon Teaching Fellows program
  • Elon School of Education
  • Specific majors*

*Elon offers programs leading to North Carolina licensure in Elementary Education, Middle Grades Education, and Special Education (General Curriculum), in special subject areas for grades K-12 (French, Physical Education, Music, and Spanish), and in high school subject areas of English, History, Math and Science.

Durham College Fair

Would you like a chance to meet with representatives of over 100 college and universities all without leaving Durham?  If so, be sure to check out the Durham College Fair.  It will be held on October 4th fom 1-4pm at Northgate Mall (parking near Sears).  Take advantage of the chance to gather information about the right college for you, learn about 2- and 4-year college programs, and find out about costs and financial aid.  A complete list of colleges and universities invited to the Fair are listed on the Durham Public Schools web site (www.dpsnc.net). 

 

Medical Career Interest 

Any high school student who is interested in a career in medicine, nursing, or other health profession is invited to apply for HPREP (Health Professions Recruitment Exposure Program).  This program is sponsored by the UNC School of Medicine and is offered on seven Saturdays from January 30th-March 13th, 2010.  The program includes lectures, labs, and tests on medical issues as well as career planning options and college preparatory sessions.  Applications and information is available in the Guidance office or at www.med.unc.edu/snma.  The deadline to apply is November 20th.  

 

Attention Sophomores! 

The North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics will be hosting an Open House for prospective students and their families on Saturday, October 31st.  This will provide an opportunity to visit the campus, explore the academic and student life programs, and ask questions of faculty, staff, and current students.  Interested students must register online by October 16th at www.ncssm.edu/admissions.  If you have any questions or are interested in applying to the NCSSM, please see your Guidance counselor. 

 

Holton Career and Resource Center

Attention Students!  Did you know there is a new school in Durham called the Holton Career and Resource Center?  This school offers programs that provide workplace training in careers such as barbering, construction, small engine repair, landscape and turf management, game design, and computer engineering.  Registration for 2nd semester classes is now available, so see your counselor to find out more.  Holton will also be having a Cisco Networking Open House on Monday, September 28th at 6:00.  Go check it out!

Sign up in guidance to attend an information session and learn more about their programs.  Interested students will meet with the representative in the Media Center at 9:30 a.m, on Wednesday, October 21st.

College Application Week

November 16-20th is College Application Week! The Class of 2010 can apply to college

online through CFNC to select school for free during this week. The Guidance

Department will be available on Thursday, November 19th, in the Media Center to assist students with the application process. Sign up in the Guidance office for an appointment. Be sure you have a CFNC account and visit www.cfnc.org/cawseniors for more information before you apply.

 

Durham Tech Concurrent Enrollment Program

Have you ever wondered about taking college courses while still in high school?  If so, one option is available through Durham Tech's Concurrent (Dual) Enrollment Program.  Students and parents are invited to an information session about the program on Thursday November 5th from 7:00 pm-8:30 pm in the TLC (room 325).  The TLC is located in the Phillips Building on the main campus of Durham Technical Community College.  The session will include information about the benefirts, requirements, and processes of Concurrent (Dual) Enrollment.  More information is available at www.durhamtech.edu/admissions/highschoolstudent.htm

 

Grandparents who are raising their grandchildren or who are offering support to help raise their grandchildren are invited to attend support and education group meetings the second Thursday of each month from 6:00 until 7:30 pm at the DPS Staff Development Center, 2107 Hillandale Road.  The next session will be Thursday, November 12 and the topic is Communicating for Everyday Life.  The sessions are sponsored by Durham County Cooperative Extension in partnership with Durham Public Schools.  Refreshments will be provided.  In December, grandparents will gather on Thursday, December 11.  Mark your calendars now.  To attend, call Peggy Kernodle at 560-0523 or email pkernodle@co.durham.nc.us

 

Summer Ventures

 

Applications for the Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics program are now available in the school counseling office. Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics is a cost free, state funded program for academically motivated high school students potentially interested in a career in science or mathematics. Summer Ventures brings rising junior and senior students together in a college style setting for 4-weeks of exciting courses.  The program sites are Appalachian St., East Carolina, NC Central University, UNC-Charlotte, UNC-Wilmington and Western Carolina. The application deadline is January 31. Interested students should see Mr. McKoy in guidance for more information.

 

Attention 9th & 10th grade students!
