What is the NHS Booster Club?
The NHS Booster Club is an all volunteer organization with 501-3C tax status that focuses on providing additional funding support to the athletic programs at Northern High School.
How are funds raised?
Revenue from the sale of athletic passes, gate receipts from sporting events, concession revenue, booster club memberships, NHS merchandise such as T-shirts, sweatshirts, etc., donations from businesses, in-kind volunteer hour donation programs from participating companies, special fund raising events such as pancake breakfasts, golf tournaments, and the annual NHS Hall of Fame dinner that honors former NHS athletes.
How are these funds used?
Northern High School currently has 17 sports fielding 26 teams (men’s and women’s). Some of these sports do not generate gate receipts for admission to help cover the cost of providing the sport. Funds raised by the booster club helps NHS fund equipment purchases, uniforms, and travel arrangements for these teams. In the 2009-2010 school year, the NHS booster club will help purchase needed equipment for softball, baseball, tennis, soccer, lacrosse, golf, and other non revenue sports.
Doesn’t Durham Public Schools fund Athletics?
Athletics are budgeted from DPS at approximately $15,000 in normal budget years. The 2009 – 2010 year will see this budget reduced accordingly as all other programs are being reduced. This makes supporting the Booster Club even more important this year. The amount allocated by DPS sounds like a lot of money, but it has to cover equipment, transportation (fuel), security at football and basketball games, officials and referee pay, sports medicine and many other items it takes to run an athletic department. The DPS allocation is spent well before the athletic year is finished. Without the booster club and team sports fundraising efforts, the NHS athletic program would have run a considerable deficit last year.
What can I do as a parent?
Join the booster club and support NHS athletics with your donation. Any level of membership is welcome. Support the fund raising efforts of the booster club and the individual teams. This coming spring, celebrate the achievements of former NHS athletes at the Hall of Fame Banquet held at Umstead Pines Country Club. Help the athletes at NHS realize their full potential by supporting the sports teams that bring recognition and pride to the students of Northern High School.
