Congratulations to Blake Williams, who ran a courageous race to finish eighth in the North Carolina Cross Country Championship.

Congratulations to Kevin Sebring, Haley Holloway, Alec Van Orsouw, Zachery Andrews, and Ryan Adams who have been selected as members of the All-County Band, which performs a free concert Saturday, Nov. 14 at 1:30pm at Brogden Middle School.

Northern theater is presenting “Shorts,” one-act plays by Shel Silverstein, author of Light in the Attic and Where the Sidewalk Ends.  Check it out Saturday at 7:30 in the auditorium. Tickets are only seven dollars.

Better than American Idol! Come see NHS talent at the Northern Chorus show on Saturday Nov. 21 at 7:30 NOT Friday Nov. 20.

Attention Seniors- This year November 16th-20th will be College Application Week!  All seniors who have not completed applications already are encouraged to do so.  Some private colleges in NC will have fee waivers during this time, and a list of those schools is available at www.cfnc.org.
 
At Northern on Thursday, November 20th, students will have the opportunity to apply online to NC colleges and universities.  Students who are interested in applying can sign up in guidance for a time slot.  Students should go online at CFNC.org and set up an account BEFORE they come to the media center to work on applications.  Counselors will be available to help. 

Northern High School will be hosting the American Red Cross on Friday December 4 for what promises to be the biggest blood drive effort in DPS history.  On behalf of the Athletic Training Student Aides and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Knight Huddle you are cordially invited to be a part of this history making event.  We are soliciting both former and novice donors as we work together to break the 100 unit barrier.  Scheduling your appointment has never been easier as you only need to email Doc Brown at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it for an appointment.  Be a lifesaver by joining me for the blood drive Friday December 4.

The Fall Sports Awards night will be Monday, Nov. 23 at 6:00 in the auditorium.  Fall sports team members should see their coach for more details.

The annual powderpuff game is Monday evening, Nov. 16 at 7:30pm at the practice football field inside the track.  Support the junior and senior female football players and male cheerleaders as the classes battle for the championship. 

The World Humanitarian Organization is sponsoring a change drive next week to raise money for Heifer, which purchases milk-producing livestock for people in poor countries.  The third period class that raises the most money will win a treat to eat.

Support Northern’s Beta Gamma Phi step team in the Fall Step Show at Hillside next Saturday, November 21.  Step team members and Mrs. Joynes in Room W-6 are selling advanced tickets for eight dollars.  They will be fifteen dollars the day of the show, so get them now. 

Students: You may not park in the Poe Gym area after school.  This lot is only for faculty and staff.  Violators will be ticketed, and your vehicle may be booted or towed.

LAST WEEK!! Eating Fruit will help you live longer and better! Get yours from the NHS Band! The Band is selling delicious fruit (oranges, tangeloes, and grapefruit) until November 20th. 10 lb boxes are $18. and 20 lb boxes are $24. ROTC is hosting its annual military ball on Saturday, December 5, at Northern.  All former and present cadets are invited.  Tickets are five dollars for cadets, seven dollars for guests.  See Major O, Sergeant J, or Cadet Ward in V-2 for more information. 

In 2009, the Northern High Booster Club began a new tradition in celebrating the rich sports tradition of the school’s past by inducting 5 charter members into the NHS Athletics Hall of Fame. This Hall of Fame recognizes and celebrates Knight and Lady Alumni who have had extraordinary success in their athletic careers, and make the NHS athletic community proud.  This year, we will again honor such NHS athletic alumni with our second class of inductees. This is where we need your help. Individuals are selected from nominations solicited from you- alumni, faculty, and friends.  Nominations are accepted from all graduates of at least 10 years, all present or former faculty, and distinguished supporters of Northern High School. The next induction will be in the Spring of 2010, as we will induct this year’s class with our 2nd Annual NHS Athletics Hall of Fame Banquet (details to follow).  Please find the form to nominate any notable alumni you believe belongs in the NHS Athletics Hall of Fame on the Northern High Booster Club Page at:  http://www.northern.dpsnc.net  under Parents/athletic boosters.  Nominations are due by January 15, 2010.

Attention 9th & 10th grade students!  Clemson University offers an exciting, weekend, college prepartatory program for 9th and 10th grade students who rank in the top 10% of their class.  Participating students will take part in high-adventure group dynamics, high-performance academic workshops, and college information sessions during one weekend in March or April 2010.  Northern can nominate interested and qualified students to attend.  If you are interested, please see Ms. Guss in the Guidance Office.   
 
Applications for the Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics program are now available in the school counseling office. Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics is a cost free, state funded program for academically motivated high school students potentially interested in a career in science or mathematics. Summer Ventures brings rising junior and senior students together in a college style setting for 4-weeks of exciting courses.  The program sites are       Appalachian St., East Carolina, NC Central University, UNC-Charlotte, UNC-Wilmington and Western Carolina. The application deadline is January 31. If you know of any students who may be interested, please have them see Mr. Mckoy for more information.

Do you know a girl aged 5-13 who wants to learn cheer skills from a top-notch program? Tell them about the third-annual Little Ladies Cheer Clinic on Saturday, December 5th from 9am-3pm.  The cost is $35.00 and includes the following:  instruction from the Northern Varsity cheerleaders, cheer clinic t-shirt, lunch, and the opportunity to cheer with the varsity cheerleaders during the home varsity girls basketball game on Dec. 8th.  The registration form can also be found on the cheerleading website http://www.northerncheer.com. Join Durham Public Schools in recognizing Superintendent Carl E. Harris at a Floating Reception on Wednesday, December 9, 3:30-5:30 pm at the DPS Staff Development Center, 2107 Hillandale Road. The Northern Site-Based Decision Making Team (SBDMT) is still looking for parents and students interested in being a part of a shared decision making group where a variety of members of the school community collaborate, where appropriate, in identifying problems, defining goals, formulating policy, shaping directions and ensuring implementation of decisions. The team needs members representing parents and students. The team will meet once each month. Serving on the SBDMT is a great way to get involved, both for parents and students. Show your athlete that you are their biggest fan! The spirit buttons are pictures of the student-athletes from all fall sports put into 1 inch and 3 inch buttons that you can wear.  The 1 inch buttons are $1 and the 3 inch buttons are $5.  If you would like to purchase buttons of your student athletes, please email to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it a list of the students, what team they play for, and the size buttons you want.

Any high school student who is interested in a career in medicine, nursing, or other health profession is invited to apply for HPREP (Health Professions Recruitment Exposure Program).  This program is sponsored by the UNC School of Medicine and is offered on seven Saturdays from January 30th-March 13th, 2010.  The program includes lectures, labs, and tests on medical issues as well as career planning options and college preparatory sessions.  Applications and information is available in the Guidance office or at www.med.unc.edu/snma.  The deadline to apply is November 20th.  

Northern High School All Sports Passes Available for parents.  Cost: $50. Benefit: All Home Sporting Events Admission. Additional Benefit: Provide $ for the General Fund of the NHS Athletic Booster Club and become a member of the Athletic Booster Club.  There is great need, this year especially, because of Athletic Program budget cuts from both state monies and DPS money.  Equipment repairs, security, payment for officiating, field/facility upkeep and improvement, training equipment, gas $ for buses to away events, coaching clinics, tournaments- travel and entry costs … for 26 sporting programs at Northern High School.
